We talk a lot about hair washing and days between washes. And although hair washing can sometimes feel like a chore, it can also feel AMAZING.
Whether or not you wear hair extensions, it’s still important to wash your hair in a way that will promote hair growth.
As a rule of thumb, we promote anywhere 3 to 7 days between washing depending on your hair type, if you have extensions, custom color, etc. Training your hair to go that long can be beneficial as long as you’re properly washing and caring for your scalp.
We’ve compiled a list of tips to remember when hair wash day comes around.
Kashmir Hair Washing Tips
Tip #1: Brush your hair BEFORE you wash it. Your hair is at its most fragile state when wet so try to brush it before you wash it so you can avoid detangling while wet.
Tip #2: Get that scalp. Another thing we love about the NBR method is being able to access your scalp. When you go longer between washes, be sure to lather your scalp to promote hair growth and get that scalp nice and clean. Scalp health = hair health.
Tip #3: Double (or triple) shampoo. If you go long periods of time between washes, give your scalp one extra round of shampoo. Shampoo once, rinse partially, add more shampoo, lather and rinse completely. You want to feel the suds on your scalp. If you don’t feel the suds on your scalp, you’re not cleaning your scalp.
Tip #4: Mask it up. Use a hair mask in between your shampoo and conditioner. We LOVE ILes Hair Mask. Before applying the mask, squeeze out the water from your hair then work in the mask. Leave it for 10-20 minutes and then apply your conditioner. It’s important to still apply conditioner to lock in that moisture from the mask.
Tip #5: Section out your rows. If you wear extensions, section out your rows and wash them one by one. This will ensure your entire scalp is getting clean and all sections of hair are being properly washed.
Tip #6: Cold water rinse. Finish with a cold water rinse if possible. Cold water helps seal the hair cuticles, making your hair appear shinier and reduces frizz.
Tip #7: Towel dry gently. After washing, avoid rough towel drying as it can cause breakage. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water and pay your hair with a soft town or use a microfiber towel to absorb moisture.
Pro Tip: No time? Do a top wash. We’re big fans of the top wash. It comes in handy when we need a quick refresh but don’t have time to dedicate to a full wash. Sometimes we just can’t plan every event around hair washing and need a quick refresh. Our version of the top wash will take you from wet to styled in less than 10 minutes!
In this top wash tutorial, Emily wears 24” Natural Beaded Rows hair extensions and shows us how to do a Top Wash from wet to styled.
How to do a Top Wash:
Section away all of your extension rows from your crown and secure the bottom half in a low bun.
Shampoo and condition only the crown of your head, everything above your top row. We use Iles Formula shampoo and conditioner!
Add product and blow out the newly washed top section. We use Serum from Iles Formula for weightless shine and heat protection.
Re-curl top section to blend with unwashed curls.
We know hair washing days can be far and few between, so follow these tips and your hair will thank you for it.
