Unlocking the Secret to Self-Care and Success in the Hair Industry

We talk about professional and personal growth as if they’re separate but in reality it’s all connected. Being in the hair industry, we’re dedicated to providing the highest level of service to our clients.

Of course, we want to give our clients the best hair and experience possible. But here's the secret: to do that, we also have to take care of ourselves. Taking care of ourselves is so multi-dimensional. It can mean different things to different people and normally all of those things work together.

We also believe that self care can show up as an investment in you. When we show up for our clients, we’re helping them show up in their lives more confidently by matching how they feel on the inside with how they look on the outside.

”I used to be totally against extensions because everyone I saw, who had them, it was so noticeable and did not look good. At the same time I was so insecure about my own hair; in the midst of trying to grow it out from a blunt bob and that awkward length is so hard to get past. My hair cut just was not it either because everything grew at different lengths. …(extensions) took me from 0 to 100 in a day!!…” - Julia (Kashmir Client)

So we’ve come to the blog to share the ways we show up for ourselves as hair stylists in hopes it inspires you to put yourself first.

Mindset.

Alright, let's talk about leveling up your mindset.

First, remember that your thoughts are super important. Pay attention to them. If you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts, try to flip it into something positive. Like turning "I can't do this" into "I can learn this!"

Next, surround yourself with good vibes. Hang out with friends who cheer you on, and read books or watch videos that inspire you.

Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are like the stepping stones to leveling up. Identify them, learn from them, and you'll get stronger.

And last but not least, believe in yourself. Know that you can grow and get better at anything you set your mind to.

Value aligned goals.

Set goals that match up with the things that really matter to you. It's like saying, "I want to do things that make me happy and feel right.

Think of it like this: value-aligned goals are like your compass for life. They point you in the direction that feels true to who you are.

Imagine you really value learning and growing. Your goal might be to read a certain number of books each month. Or if kindness is your thing, your goal could be to do one nice thing for someone every day.

The magic happens when your goals match what's important to you. It's like you're following a treasure map and the treasure is a happier, more fulfilled you.

Abundance over scarcity.

Picture this: It's like having a big, delicious pizza. Abundance says, "There's plenty for everyone! Have a slice, and there'll still be more." Scarcity, on the other hand, worries that if you have a slice, there won't be enough left.

In life, when we choose abundance, we believe that there are plenty of good things to go around. We share, help others, and feel happy when they succeed too. It's like saying, "The world is full of opportunities and joy!"

But if we stick with scarcity, we hoard, compete, and feel worried about running out. Abundance is like having a heart full of happiness, while scarcity leaves you feeling like you're missing out.

So, remember, choose abundance, and you'll see how much more amazing life can be!

Small things make a big impact.

Think of it like dropping a tiny pebble into a calm pond. That small pebble creates ripples that spread far and wide, touching everything around it.

In life, it's the little acts of kindness, the small efforts to learn, or the tiny changes in your habits that can create a huge, positive impact. Like smiling at someone, reading a book for 20-minutes a day, or waking up early  – these small things can make the biggest impact.

So, don't underestimate the power of small actions. They can add up to something truly remarkable.

Taking care of you.

Self care can mean so many things to different people. How you treat your mind and body are key.

Just as you charge your devices so they work well, you need to recharge yourself too. This means getting enough rest, eating healthy, and doing things that make you happy.

This can look like seeing a therapist regularly, investing in your appearance, working out, going on a walk, sitting in the sunshine, positive self talk and mirror work - the list goes on.

When you take care of yourself, you're better able to take care of others and tackle life's challenges. So, remember, you're important too, and self-care is like giving yourself a big, warm hug.

Stay curious and keep learning.

Imagine curiosity as your superpower, like a detective exploring a mystery. When you stay curious, you keep asking questions and learning new things.

Remember when we talked about taking care of yourself? Well, staying curious is a way to take care of your mind. It's like feeding your brain with knowledge snacks.

One way we practice this is with our NBR community. We attend regular training, yearly conferences and some even participate in NBR Mastermind. NBR Mastermind is an extra training exclusive to artists after they are NBR certified and licensed. It focuses on how to better your business behind the chair and show up as an elite extension artist.

So the point is, you can’t show up for anyone till you do the inside work to show up for yourself. Our happiness and fulfillment has so much to do with how we take care of our bodies and minds.

When you work in an industry where you’re dedicated to helping clients feel their best, you want to always give your all to each and every client.

“I am a breast cancer survivor, and as a result of chemo and mildly effective cold-capping, I lost about 70% of my hair. It has been very difficult to recover physically and emotionally, but going to Kashmir has helped tremendously! …When I saw the finished product, I literally cried because I felt like my old self!” - Rebecca (Kashmir Client)

We’re here to tell you that it's possible but you have to take care of yourself first. Taking care of yourself can look a lot like taking care of a client. So in other words, be your own client!
